Using a spreadsheet to manage inventory and a word processor to publish catalogs and issue invoices was okay in the seventies but it was time consuming and often full of transpositions and other transcription errors. Getting timely information out the door to potential customers was often less than rewarding and publishing the "what have you done for me lately" reports for management was prone to errors and very time consuming because of the manual processes involved.
